Sweden sweet sounds meet UnizuluPhumlani Nkwanyana

The University of Zululand had a top class celebration with a well-known choir from Stockholm, Sweden. This magnificent gathering was held at the world-class wetland, iSimangaliso, St Lucia. Due to the eruption of strike on campus this concert, which was scheduled to be at BZ, was moved to St Lucia.

The Choral Society from Unizulu joined the Europeans at the shore of the lake, St Lucia estuary, and enjoyed the brilliant overhead sun. Both choirs shred their music, as birds joined them with their sweet sound. The Swedes had an opportunity to learn some Zulu words which were added to spice up the gathering.

Unizulu’s media co-coordinator, Clare Taylor, said, “It was a meeting of opposites producing a new fusion sound and marking the beginning of a relationship of musical discovery, promoting harmony between people from countries far apart through a new form of diplomacy”.

A strong and solid bond was created between these two choirs, and a common ground was reached to take choral music to greater heights. Unizulu choral society is currently the champions of choral music throughout South Africa, after beating all Universities in South Africa. The society is still scooping trophies in many choral competitions across the country.

New Lectures Halls under way for Unizulu

New lecture halls under way for UnizuluPhumlani Nkwanyana

The University of Zululand is in the process of improving the standard of education within the Zululand community. This is confirmed by the new lecture halls that are to be built. In an effort to avoid overcrowding in the current lecture halls, the establishment of new lecture halls will be welcome.

On the 8th March 2010, a tender was awarded to Aveng –Grinaker LTA. The parking area adjacent the faculty of Education and department of Nursing Science will be used to camp the construction workers. The new lecture facilities will be constructed next to Inkanyiso complex. More than R33 million will be spent in the construction.

According to the contract manager, Paul Muir, the lecture halls are expected to be complete by 13 February 2012. “These lecture halls are multi-purpose, so they can even cater for other functions besides lecture sessions” said Muir. About 2000 students can be accommodated in these new facilities which will create a conducive environment for learning. During the construction, the site will be cordoned off. “Students are urged not to access the site for the benefit of their health” explained Muir.

Director for Physical planning and works, Mike Symthe, invited staff members who are willing to see new building concepts to visit the library where posters are displayed.

The building of residences is also underway next to Siqalo. New double story students’ residents will accommodate 336 people, 24 students per floor. A dining area with ablution and cooking facilities will be provided for these new residents.
